2. Let go of trying to please everyone.
Some people will never be happy.
3. Get specific.
Negative people live for the generalizations. They love the broad-brush approach to life. Instead, talk about specific issues, facts. This approach brings clarity to what is upsetting to them and what lessons you might need to learn even in their poor attitude.
4. Seek understanding.
Ask yourself, “Why is this person so negative?” Often it is because of a hurt in their life. When you understand their perspective, it helps you know what you need to absorb and what you need to ignore.
5. Don’t overreact.
Negative people love to get a rise out of you. Keep your cool, speak calmly, don’t argue, state the facts. Don’t allow yourself to get all riled up. You will only validate their claims.
6. Choose to be positive!
Don’t play emotional games or get dragged down to their world. Take the high road. It is less crowded.
7. Love them.
Seriously?? Love them??
Yes. You may not like them, but you can still love them. Your ability to rise to the better angels of your nature will make you a better person in the long run, and it might make them see their need for change.
